On Saturday morning, December 6, eight dedicated volunteers gathered at Heritage Park for the City of Mableton's Rivers Alive Cleanup. This was no ordinary litter pickup; the small crew spent their morning tackling abandoned items ranging from small debris, wrappers, and plastic bottles to evidence of illegal dumping, including old tires and car parts.
They even recovered a fallen Heritage Park sign.

Their enormous passion highlights the grassroots activism driving Mableton's green future.

For volunteers like resident Jack Morales, the motivation was simple community pride. "It's Heritage Park. I don't live too far," Jack shared. "Just do something a little just for myself, to still do a little community work."
Built on Grassroots Power
Emily Groth, Mableton’s Director of Sustainability, Waste, and Beautification, explained the city builds upon existing efforts, not starting from scratch. Groth is genuinely excited by the foundation she inherited.
She noted that the desire to keep Mableton beautiful isn't just a departmental goal, it's deeply woven into the city’s identity.
This commitment is evident everywhere, from City Council meetings and Mableton 2045 planning sessions to active online community groups. Groth emphasized: "There is a really passionate and dedicated grassroots group of people," adding that Mableton has "just a fabric woven through the community of grassroots all hands on deck."
She highlighted the work of local groups like the Mableton Treatment Coalition and the weekly Adopt-a-Mile cleanups as proof of this deep community commitment.
Why a Park Cleanup Protects the River

The cleanup focused on the watershed. Groth emphasized that environmental protection must start everywhere. "Any cleanup at the end of the day is a waterway cleanup," she explained. This is because wrappers dropped in the park eventually flow into storm drains and end up in a waterway like Nickajack Creek. By cleaning up the park and removing illegally dumped items like the tires, the small team protected the wider Mableton stream system.
Groth confirmed this is only the beginning; her department is working to formalize this dedication by creating a body similar to Keep Cobb Beautiful to organize future efforts. Mableton’s green future is being written by its dedicated residents, eight hands at a time.
Stay Connected to the People Making a Difference
This Rivers Alive Cleanup shows exactly why Mableton is unique: when there's a problem, residents step up. From cleanups to city planning, we believe Mableton's future is shaped by the people who live here.
