Do you know what’s right in our community? Nestled right off of Riverside Parkway, west of Factory Shoals Road, is a place that has been a staple of Mableton for nearly 25 years: the South Cobb Recreation Center.

While many of us drive past its entrance every day, you might be surprised by how much is happening inside.

More Than Just a Gym

Dorian Cameron, the center’s Recreation Program Coordinator and a Mableton resident who lives right off Veterans Memorial, is on a mission to show that the center is a "one-stop shop" for everyone.

"We’re allowed the freedom to listen to the community and recognize needs," Dorian says. "The biggest benefit is putting something out there and seeing people take to it."

That variety is exactly what’s drawing people in. Whether it’s a toddler in a dance class or a senior in a fitness session, the center is becoming a place where every family member can find a reason to visit.

A Social Bridge: The Volleyball Example

To see what makes this place special, you only have to look at the volleyball courts on a Friday night. It’s a perfect example of how the center builds a sense of belonging.

For Monica Lombard, the center is a vital social bridge for her son, who attends school online. "This is his opportunity to socialize and do something he likes to do and exercise," Monica shares. "I like the vibe here. It’s relaxed, friendly, and versatile for kids, teens, and adults. It’s just a chill, friendly environment."

For others, like Panyatta Roberts, it’s a safe place to learn something new. After moving here from New York, she struggled to find adult sports classes.

"When I first moved down here, nobody wanted to teach adults," Panyatta says. She finally found her rhythm at South Cobb's free open gyms. "I just kept coming so I can learn how to play. Now, I sign up for everything I can."

Even those who travel to play here, like Alejandra Sosa, stay for the atmosphere.

"We really like coming here. There’s a lot of parking, and having two courts is a big thing... the workers upfront have always been pretty cool to us. They even let us stay later sometimes if they see there's really good competition going on."

Your Voice is Powerful

The most important thing for Mableton residents to know is that this center belongs to you. Dorian believes in local stewardship and has seen firsthand how a single request can change the facility.

He recalls a neighbor who once emailed asking for a ping pong table. "I told the man, 'Go home, send me an email.' I forwarded it, and by the end of the week, we had a table," Dorian shares. "I tell people all the time: your voice is more powerful, frankly, than mine."

The message from the South Cobb Recreation Center is simple: The doors are open, the programs are growing, and the direction of the center is up to you.
